DESCRIPTION:"These Hands\, This Leaf" Honors CT Tobacco WorkersWindsor Historical Society invites the public to the opening reception of its new exhibition\, "These Hands\, This Leaf: Leonard Hellerman's Photographs of Windsor's Tobacco Workers\," Wednesday\, June 24\, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the community\, and registration is encouraged.Tobacco has long defined Windsor\, which is recognized as the heart of the Connecticut Tobacco Valley. This exhibit presents an intimate portrait of the skilled workers who built that legacy\, captured by Windsor photographer Dr. Leonard Hellerman.One of Hellerman's favorite subjects is Connecticut River Valley shade-grown tobacco (used mainly for premium cigars) cultivated under white cloth. "I have likely taken more photographs in shade tobacco fields than anyone\," Hellerman said. Growing tobacco from seed to harvest requires months of skilled labor and care\, and he's been there photographing every step."Years ago\, I was given permission by [the Thrall family] to photograph their workers\, fields\, and sheds\," Hellerman said.
