Join the Archer Memorial African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church, the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) Anthropology Program Field School, and the Windsor Freedom Trail for a presentation on an exciting excavation project that occurred in June of this summer on the grounds of this historic church.
This church played a significant role in shaping the religious and social connections of a growing African Americans population that settled in Windsor’s Hayden Station/Pond Road area during the 19th century. Additionally, because of the A.M.E. Zion tradition being rooted in the anti-slavery movement and because of this church’s significance in local African American history, it is a site on the Connecticut Freedom Trail and the Windsor Freedom Trail.
During this excavation project the collaborators worked together, experiencing various aspects of archaeological fieldwork to further inform the membership of significant historical aspects of the church and its’ earlier church community. Come to hear about this experience, learn about the process, and view a display of cultural materials discovered at the site.
