As part of our programming for Living Inside, Windsor Art Center presents a screening of The Quilters, followed by a Q&A with the Director, Jenifer McShane. Free to attend, open to the public. (Documentary run time: 32 minutes)
The documentary follows the daily lives of several quilters inside the sewing room at South Central Correctional Center, a Level 5 maximum security prison in a small town in Missouri. In tracking several quilts from design to completion, audiences come to know these men, witnessing their struggles, triumphs, and sense of pride as they create something beautiful in this windowless sacred space, deep within the prison walls. The Quilters was shortlisted for an Academy Award.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Jenifer McShane is an award-winning independent filmmaker committed to using film to bridge understanding in situations where divisions typically keep people apart. Her current documentary, The Quilters follows a men’s quilting group in a maximum-security prison in Missouri. Her last film, Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops won a Jury Award at South By Southwest and an Emmy for Outstanding Editing. Jenifer spent four years visiting Bedford Hills Correctional Facility to make Mothers of Bedford which reveals the impact of incarceration jailed mothers and their children.
